What Gas Safe Training Do You Need?

To legally work on gas appliances in the UK you must be on the Gas Safe Register. To get registered you need to hold current ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) qualifications. These are assessed — not just taught — and must be renewed every 5 years.

Common ACS units:
  • CCN1 — Core domestic gas (required for most domestic gas work)
  • CKR1 — Domestic gas cookers and ranges
  • HTR1 — Domestic gas fires and wall heaters
  • CEN1 — Domestic central heating boilers
  • TPCP1A — Tightness testing and purging (natural gas pipework)

Choose a training provider that is UKAS-accredited, offers hands-on practical assessment, and can guide you through Gas Safe Register membership after qualification.

Gas Safe Training — FAQs

ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) is the standard gas safety assessment required for engineers to legally work on gas appliances in the UK. You must hold current ACS qualifications to register with Gas Safe, and they must be renewed every 5 years.

Core domestic gas (CCN1) typically takes 3–4 days including assessment. Additional units like CKR1 (cookers) or HTR1 (fires) can be added on and usually take 1–2 days each. Experienced engineers refreshing their tickets may complete an assessment in as little as 1 day.

ACS training and assessment typically costs between £500 and £1,500 depending on the number of units, provider, and location. NVQ Level 2 or 3 plumbing qualifications are more comprehensive and cost more — usually £3,000–£6,000 over 1–2 years.

Yes. To register with the Gas Safe Register you must hold current ACS qualifications relevant to the type of gas work you carry out. Without valid ACS, you cannot legally carry out gas work in the UK. Gas Safe registration also requires annual renewal.
